ONE IN A MILLION ME

Every year as we celebrate our birthdays, we wish the next will be a blast. I wished that, too. And it came true.
Last year, I celebrated my birthday at Kamayan restaurant in Manila with my media friends and celebrities. TV host and former Councilor Kate Coseteng hosted my birthday with Hero Bautista, Sen. Nikki Coseteng, and Dr. Calayan’s family.
This year, I think, is the best year of my life. More than a hundred guests celebrated with me despite heavy rains. The party was awesome, thanks to Signum, Stage One Engineering, Signum Digital Printing, Andy Lugtu of Malungai Life Oil for the delicious food, Dr. Jean Marquez, PRC SEC-GEN Gwen Pang and my grand-uncle Manny V. Pangilinan for the lechon.
I was surprised for the presence of Boxing Champ Gerry Penalosa and his wife Goody, business tycoon Andy Lugtu, businessman Ariel Nepomuceno, PAGCOR’s Ed Caeg, Pastor Joey Rafael. Direk Hero Bautista and his wife Rio and many more.
I also thank Dr. Manny Calayan, Dra. Jean Marquez, Selina Sevilla, Lalen Calayan, Slykane, Archie Malate, Women’s Journal Editor Rene Bisquerra and Mike Swift who got stranded in the heavy outpour, and Kate Coseteng who missed the party because of a bad jetlag.
My editors Isabel De Leon, Maridol Bismark, Gianna Maniego, Reira Mallari, Ricky Lo, Dina Chan, Ken Velasco, Klink Ang, Malou Rosal, Gie Trilliana , Eliz Lim, Enjel Manato and PCSO Chairman Margie Juico sent their birthday wishes through text messages. I got an unexpected call from Vice President Binay.
The first quarter of the year was very challenging. I overlooked some contracts that have expired, though I believe that those contracts were not really meant to be renewed for one reason or another. After my TV show’s final episode October last year, I predicted the first quarter of 2013 will be difficult. But I held on to Hebrews 11.1, “Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.”
God tested my faith. Because whenever bad things happen in my life, I know He is there.
I had a sad experience after a two-week coverage in London last March. I became a victim of trust by a fellow journalist, a friend. I almost lost my credibility and with it, my hard-earned 10-year career, but I was able to prove that people in the industry had utmost trust and confidence in me.
April, I flew to New York to cover the fight of Nonito “The Flash “ Donaire. I stayed in New Jersey with my publisher for eight days then flew to Los Angeles. I went back to Manila last May 2.
I told myself that after covering the losses of Pacquiao, Donaire, and UFC Filipino fighters, I’d pass up on the Pacquiao fight in Macau in November. I also needed to rest my back due to my scoliosis.
When I got back, I was excited for my upcoming projects. But what was funny was I did not know what these projects were. God has not revealed them to me yet. I just claimed and declared it.
Three weeks before my special day, I received an email from a prospective client, instructing me to prepare my PR presentation. I did, and by God’s grace, my proposal was approved.
Mark 9.23 says, “Everything is possible for him who believes.”

I am inspired to know that I am one in a million. I have witnessed greatness unfold and have seen extraordinary moments take place, but what has happened to me is truly unique and special. I have the best job in the world as a PR manager, consultant, image builder, cook, waiter, TV show producer, massage therapist, good son, responsible father, a contributor writer for lifestyle and sports, a production assistant in church and everything else in between.

PCSO continues innovations

The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) has sealed an agreement with 19 private hospitals for its Individual Medical Assistance Program (IMAP).
This is PCSO’s response to the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation’s call for a Universal Health Care for all Filipinos, also known as Kalusugan Pangkalahatan (KP) to ensure that all Filipinos have access to quality health services that are efficiently delivered, equitably distributed, fairly financed and appropriately utilized by an informed and empowered public.
The 19 hospitals are Alabang Medical Clinic, Capitol Medical Center, Colinas Verdes Hospital Managers Corp. (formerly Cardinal Santos Medical Center), Dr. Jesus Delgado Memorial Hospital, Delos Santos Medical Center, Manila Adventist Medical Center, Manila Doctors Hospital, Marikina Valley Medical Center, Martinez Memorial Hospital, Mary Johnston Hospital, Mary Chiles Hospital, Inc., Medical Center Manila, Medical Center Paranaque, Metropolitan Medical Center, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, St. Clare's Medical Center , St. Agnes Hospital, United Doctors Medical Center, and UERM Memorial Medical Center.
Conceptualized in 1993 to address the medical and financial needs of sick individuals, the IMAP covers individuals from all walks of life, regardless of political affiliation, social standing, whether he is a member or non-member of Philhealth, as well as HMO cardholders.
The program uses a standard rate in the processing of financial assistance to ensure the rational allocation of resources to marginalized individuals who come for assistance to PCSO.
“Over the years, the program is on constant look out for innovations to effectively deliver services to a wider scale of beneficiaries putting emphasis on the role of the agency of augmenting to the medical needs of our clientele,” reports PCSO Chairman Margie Juico.
The PCSO is the principal government agency for raising and providing funds for health programs, medical assistance and services, and charities of national character. In adherence to its main thrust of providing funds for health programs and other charities, the PCSO is engaged in various social welfare and development programs.
“Our mission is to provide timely and responsive health and welfare assistances, hence, we are constantly on the look out to improve and upgrade our services to the public,” ends Chairman Juico.
PCSO saves great deal in first half of the year

The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO)’s on-line lottery sector has surpassed itself yet again in savings for January to June 2013.
A total of P149,078,507.93 in savings was generated from rental expenses, equipment leave agreement and thermal and bet slips (paper for lotto bets and receipts for lotto payments).
PCSO Chairman Margarita P. Juico added that the agency has also saved from streamlining of processes, institution of reforms, reduction by 20% of the cost of medicines from the lowest-priced formulary, rationalization of personnel, LGUs’ donation of office space for PCSO branch offices nationwide, cost cutting measures and judicious spending, review of our game’s prize structure and strict fiscalization, and negotiations with existing suppliers for a reduction in prices.
“The Board made a commitment to each other and to PCSO to do whatever will be beneficial to the institution and not to themselves and wasted no time in instituting internal controls, fiscal discipline and good governance. We revoked contracts which were found to be disadvantageous to PCSO, reviewed and revised board resolutions which did not sit well with what we intended to do, we did a time and motion study as well as a workflow of all processes especially the frontline services to ensure punctual, effective service was rendered,” shares the Chairman.
Further, the once co-mingling of operating, charity and prize funds was segregated. Before, there was no way of knowing which fund was already used up. The segregation required a serious review of budget utilization, meaning spending within the limits as apportioned in a year. The PCSO also had an annual procurement plan based on the corporate operating budget as well as a review of administrative processes and financial policies.
In order to maintain this, Chairman Juico has the following strategies: “We are almost done with the rationalization plan of the office. We try to put good people in positions of responsibility. We try to empower them with the right attitude and behaviour. We implement good governance habits so that long after we are gone, they can stand up against any board member or person who will make them do otherwise.”

Some members of the Congress commended the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) for its good performance, as General Manager Jose Ferdinand M. Rojas II presented the agency’s operational and financial highlights and major thrusts for 2012 and 2013, as well as plans and programs for 2014.
Rep. Isidro Ungab, Chairperson of the House Committee on Appropriations led 21 other congressmen from other committees in giving praise to PCSO and also to Chairman Margie Juico for the agency’s accomplishments. “I salute Chairman Juico; she is more specific and strict on her rules. And we had a great time listening to her,” said Rep. Noel Villanueva of Tarlac. Chairman Juico and GM Roxas reported on the performance of PCSO for the past years and the current year, the outlook for the coming years, and the fiscal and macroeconomic assumptions used in the formulation of the agency’s budget.
The chairman informed the House of PCSO’s distributions of revenue allocation from the sale of sweepstakes, lotto and other games for the past three years (2010-2012) and estimates for 2013 and 2014, including actual remittances to the National Treasury and mandatory contributions pursuant to laws and other executive issuances. Juico also reported about contributions of the PCSO to the National Treasury in terms of taxes, dividends and other remittances for the last five years, and the COA Annual Audit Report for FY 2012, PCSO Annual Report for the year 2012, FY 2013 Corporate Operating Budget as approved by the Board of Directors, and Fund Allocation for various laws as of June 30, 2013.
The PCSO is the principal government agency for raising and providing funds for health programs, medical assistance and services, charities of national character, as well as various social welfare and development programs. Chairman Juico reflects integrity in the way she leads the agency. Calayan in probation in the US, now back in Manila

MANILA, PHILIPPINES (via PCSO) Beauty doctor to the stars Manny and Pie Calayan were sentenced to three years of probation in Glendale, California after they were charged with four counts of practicing medicine without a license last September arrived in the Ninoy Aquino International Airport via Eva Airlines yesterday noon.
Manny Calayan, the pioneer of Smartlipo and Vaserlipo in the Philippines, said that one of his staff at the Calayan Medical Aesthetics clinic in West Hollywood performed procedures outside of the clinic. He also denied that the Hollywood clinic was shut down, as previous reports said.
“It’s not true that we’re practicing unlicensed here. It is not true we’re running an unlicensed office here, so wag sila maniwala sa mga chismis na ‘yan. It’s true that it was one of our staff, but it’s not in our premises,” Calayan said in a press conference held in a restaurant in Makati City.
He said that he and wife Pie only did procedures that they were licensed to do at the Hollywood clinic, such as facials, spas, and non-invasive beauty treatments.
The Calayans have filed a lawsuit against the said staff member, their former clinic manager Aida Arceo, who ran off with $2.5 million. Arceo has denied all charges and refused to be interviewed but said she can prove her innocence.
Calayan alleged that Arceo has been declaring that she has shares and money contributions at the Calayan Corporation USA since the start of the business in Hollywood. Dr. Manny also claimed Arceo sold Calayan products without their knowledge and some of the products are not even Calayan. She pretended to be Dra. Pie and called their bank manager, trying to get their bank account details.
“She brought our patients to other doctors, even sold our clinic fictitiously. She borrowed money from us. She billed us without official invoices and official receipts. She always asked Dra. Pie for check payments named under her,” Doc Manny divulged some of the things Aida Arceo did.
Aida’s family also put up a medical supply shop in the USA which Doc Manny called “fictitious.” She used this shop to bill the Calayans for medical supplies that were not really for them. Arceo has also victimized Filipino celebrities, private individuals, as well as other doctors.
Even while on probation, the doctors are not required to report to a probation officer and will not be monitored. They should not break any laws during their three-year probationary period. They will also pay fines of more than $10,000.
Last month, the Calayans pleaded guilty to one count each of a misdemeanor; violating the business and professions code for operating a business without a license.
“There’s no jail time, just a standard admission, no civil liability, there’s been no restitution request as of yet. Just a 36-month probation, that’s it. Just a business and professions code violation,” explained Atty. David Hakimfar, the Calayans’ lawyer. #

Ready to be Mommy

When she had her first child four years ago, she was more than ready
to be a mommy. She was of age, has been married for almost a year, and
was in the career she has dreamed of.Her heart was also set on
becoming a mother.
Ryan Cedric Andreas came into the life of the three-term councilor of
the second district of Valenzuela City KateGalang-Coseteng, and with
him came a newfound joy for the neophyte mom. Kate is married toJulian
Coseteng, councilor of the third district of Quezon City, and Ryan
completed their little family.
Kate says that husband Julian was fascinated with the three names they
gave Ryan. Ryan means “king,” Cedric means “kindly and loved,” and
Andreas means “manly” or “warrior.”
As ready as she thought she was, Kate still had “panic” moments as a
mother. One time, Ryan had a really bad case of diarrhea and the
always-elegant and cool Kate did not know what to do.
“I panicked and rushed to the E.R. We prayed hard and of course it
really helped that we were blessed with a good pediatrician,” Kate
shares.She admits that the hardest part of being a mom is taking care
of a sick child.
Joshua Caleb Matthew came three years after.
He was named after the Bible character who led God’s people into the
Promised Land. Joshua means “God is salvation.” Caleb was Joshua’s
loyal friend and encourager who, because of his faith, was one of the
few who believed that they can claim the land the Lord promised. Caleb
means “fearless, bold and loyal.” Matthew means “God’s gift” and
happened to be the first book of the Bible that Kate and Julian read
together from beginning to end.
Four-year-old Ryan is very inquisitive, askinglots of questions and
playing with all sorts of toys. He loves tagging along with his
parents wherever they go. Physically, Ryan got Kate’s eyes, height and
love for numbers.
Caleb, only 10 months old, is very cheerful and gets very excited
around people (the makings of a politician, just like his mom and
dad?). It looks like he also got Kate’s height. Healso got the hair of
Kate’s dad. Both boys got their parents’ love for eating!
Mommy Kate is a loving mom, the kind of mother who prioritizes the
welfare of her children above her own and the kind who puts a high
premium on her children’s relationship with God. Kate considers her
own mother as her mentor in parenting.
“From my mom, I’ve learned how to be patient and nice to my children.
When you meet my mom, you’ll immediately notice that she’s very nice.
Actually every time my children misbehave, or when I’m starting to get
irritated with some of the thing they do, I would remember my mom,”
Kate says.
Kate, who is always excited to go home to kiss and hug her two boys,
also tries to be a disciplinarian to Ryan, who already attends Nursery
school.
“We ‘use the rod’ in situations when there is repeated disobedience
and defiance to existing rules that have been explained. Before we
spank, we explain why and of course we restore and pray after we
discipline,” Kate explains.
The Coseteng family enjoys spending time together – travelling, going
to the mall, attending church, watching movies and playing. Soon, they
would also want to have a little princess, a baby girl so that the
kuyas will have someone to take care of.
Kate would like to be a bit stricter in terms of handling the sleeping
pattern and habits of her children, particularly of Ryan who sleeps
quite late. It is a challenge to adjust his sleeping pattern to a more
healthy one. To do that, Kate needs to fix her own sleeping pattern
and adjust her schedule according to her children’s needs.
Right now, Kate is focusing on raising the boys with the proper
attitude and fear of God.For her, the most important thing is to teach
her children to know God and trust in Him and everything else will
follow.
“Asparents, we have learned that blessings of all kinds will come with
having a strong and personal relationship with the Lord,” Kate says.
Just like any mom, Kate hopes and prays that the little gentlemen,
while growing up, will not be involved with the wrong crowd.
“I also pray that they be successful in everything they do, keeping
the the Lord in their hearts and minds in whatever they do and
wherever they go,” says Mommy Kate.
This day of moms, Kate would love to have a “personal butler” because
“I just want to sleep and eat on Mother’s Day,” she laughs.
For the mothers out there, Kate wishes, “May the Lord guide you in all
the things you do and may you and your family be blessed with good
health and happiness.” #
Amy All The Way

From the smooth voice over Radio Romance, to the sweet-image Palibhasa
Lalake mainstay, to the bubbly Pera o Bayong game master, to the
spirited Face to Face host … Amy Perez has gone a long, long way.
She has become a wife, a mother, a friend, an enemy, a lover, a
fighter – but has remained gorgeous and gracious through the years.
“I have been in this business since I was 17 years old, practically
half of my life. Ito na yung buhay ko,” says Amy, who actually wanted
to be a preschool teacher or a flight attendant when she was younger.
Showbusiness has changed Amy’s life in so many ways, and she admits
that the most obvious and most practical is that it has enabled her to
pay for all her needs and buy many of her wants.
Quite visible on TV nowadays after TV5 offered her another break, Amy
hosts three Kapatid Network programs – Good Morning Club, the landmark
and only talakserye Face to Face and a follow-up show, the docu-drama
Untold Stories Mula sa Face to Face. Amy’s seemingly very busy
schedule is actually not that hectic, and is family-friendly, too.
“Everyday I try to sleep at 9:30 pm then wake up around 3:45 am. I say
a prayer, shower and get ready for work. I have Good Morning Club at 5
to 7:30 am. I’m back home by 8:30 and that’s the time I do my mother
duties – cooking, doing my grocery, paying the bills, among others.
Wednesdays and Thursdays I tape for Face to Face and Untold Stories,”
shares Amy, who has starred in many shows of different genres.
Amy’s favorite role right now is being a mother to a teenager and a
toddler. Adi, her son with former husband Brix Ferraris, is now 14
years old and Sean Kyle, her son with current partner and radio
reporter Carlo Castillo, is 3. Whenever she is home, Amy cooks for her
boys, a hobby she would like to develop by taking culinary arts
courses when she gets the chance. Amy goes on “jogging, running or
biking” dates with Adi at the UP Oval and spends lots of play time
with Kyle at home, putting puzzles together or reading books. The
whole family loves watching movies.
Between the two, Daddy Carlo is the disciplinarian, while Mommy Amy
tries to strike a balance between being strict and being a spoiler.
“Adi knows when I’m mad, then he knows he will have to do something
para hindi ako magalit,” Amy says, “I’m lucky kasi magalang at
mababait naman ang mga anak ko,” continues the proud mom.
More than anything, Amy learned to become a fighter in this business.
A fighter “in a good sense, meaning you have to be hard working and
dedicated in your craft,” she clarifies.
Amy admits she is happier now and that she has no regrets in her 40
plus years of existence.
“Except lang now that I’m old, I realized na sana when I was younger,
I had more patience in life. I could have avoided the suffering,” Amy
says, referring to her failed marriage with Brix, “Minadali ko kasi
ang pagpapakasal,” she continues. Amy filed for annulment from Brix
but was denied by the Supreme Court.
If Amy could be in Face to Face herself, she would want to face her
ex-husband “so I can finally tell him straight that I forgave him a
long time ago and that I wish him well,” she sighs.
Behind the spotlight, Amy is a simple girl who does her grocery by
herself. She tries to be as normal as she can when she is off from
work. If not in showbiz, Amy would probably be flying all over the
world as a flight attendant because she loves to travel. And
travelling to Europe with the love of her life Carlo is definitely at
the top of her bucket list. When she can no longer host or act, Amy

With all these roles, activities, and dreams, Amy is careful to
maintain her health, and her sanity for that matter.
“I try to workout at least once a week. I sometimes follow the South
Beach diet or refrain from eating rice. I do yoga,” shares Amy, who
does not smoke and drink. To de-stress, Amy reads a book, goes to the
spa, or watches a movie.
To stay beautiful, Amy washes her face everyday and removes make-up
right after taping, she does not shampoo everyday, gets a
manicure/pedicure every week, sleeps 8 hours each night, drinks lots
of water and has her facial once a month.
For her skin care, Amy only trusts Calayan Surgicentre. She wants

care of her skin.

No Mystery in Their Love

They are one of the most beautiful couples in Philippine politics. And while their theme song is Julia Fordham and Nina’s “Love Moves in Mysterious Ways,” their love story is no mystery at all.
What started out as a political campaign for Quezon City Third District Councilor Julian Edward Emerson Coseteng and Valenzuela City Second District Councilor Kate Abigael Galang Coseteng, ended up in marriage. It wasn’t love at first sight, not even at second or third.
The firs time they met was in 2004 in a meeting of the National Capital Region Chapter of The National Movement of Young Legislators (NMYL), an organization of city and municipal councilors, vice governors, vice mayors and provincial board members from all over the country who were 35 years old and below at the time of their election. Julian was the chapter president and was campaigning for the NMYL’s national presidency. Kate rooted for him.
Julian won the elections, and eventually, Kate’s heart. The two officially started dating a week after the elections with Julian courting Kate with flowers, letters, dates and romance. His persistence and determination clinched it.
“I made sure that I was there for her and I made every effort to be with her whenever time permitted. The courtship wasn’t easy and there were a number of challenges. However, I felt that I was doing things effortlessly. I believe that in life, if you’re really serious about someone or something, everything feels light and easy no matter how difficult it looks from another perspective. I guess I made her feel how serious I was,” Julian, the son of former Senator Nikki Coseteng, recalls.
Kate gave her yes to Julian right in the water when they both took their staff to a joint summer outing in Zambales. The other yes came amidst a romantic ambience along Roxas Boulevard. With a string quartet playing during dinner at the rooftop of the Bayview International Towers, Julian got down on one knee and slipped an engagement ring on Kate’s finger.
“Then we danced. It was nice, if I could say so myself. She was speechless for hours,” Julian shares.
“I was quiet for 6 hours,” Kate admits. After several months, Julian and Kate tied the knot at Sanctuario de San Antonio in Manila or San Agustin Church and have been married for five years already. Julian calls their marriage “a wonderful, exciting journey that I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world.”
Julian and Kate are both very busy persons. Kate, the majority floor leader of the city council of Valenzuela, barely has time for coffee in the morning and she usually brings the kids with her to work. But, the two make sure they spend quality time as a couple, watching movies at home after work, going out on movie-dinner dates, strolling in the mall or travelling whenever they can afford it.
As with other marriages, it is not always a bed of roses. According to Julian, they have encountered the usual, normal problems that all married couples go through – communication, finances, careers, adjustment to personalities and behavior, among other things. Kate says that they would often have arguments that they try to resolve before sleeping.
“But thankfully, we can say that we have adjusted and overcome a lot to make things work,” Julian shares.
Both Julian and Kate say that it’s not a “what” that keeps their marriage strong, but a “who.” They believe that with God in the center of their marriage, challenges are easier to overcome.
“We can’t claim to be perfect spouses in a perfect marriage. But we can claim the wisdom and the grace of a perfect God to guide us,” explains Julian.
As a wife, Kate loves cooking and taking care of her baby boys. She likes that Julian is very sensitive, loving, and patient with her. Julian’s favorite part of being a husband is “knowing that I am sharing a life and a home with someone who inspires me to do the best I can for my family.” He says he will never want to change Kate’s strong personality, because it tempers him.
Given a chance, Kate dreams of travelling around the world for one straight year without thinking of work. Julian dreams of giving that to Kate. But, right now, they are still needed here – by their family, their constituents, and their friends who are all blessed to be part of this beautiful couple’s lives. #
